This historic three-story Tarrytown limestone cottage, built as a weekend retreat in 1906, welcomes you from the courtyard with large double cedar doors accented with iron hinges. Skylights adorn the airy tiled kitchen, the bathroom features an oversized Jacuzzi tub, and a stone staircase leads to the second floor queen bedroom. A private rooftop terrace with stone railing engulfs the canopy of large oak trees in the courtyard, framing stunning views of Lake Austin. The large stone courtyard is outfitted with a fire place and sitting area that set the stage for relaxing nights outside and easy entertaining. The courtyard and back lawn are shaded by a canopy of oak trees while the perimeter of the property is surrounded by stone fencing that exude the comfort and seclusion of unique old world living. Very romantic!
***Also located on the property is a larger Garden Suite suitable for up to 4 guests which is HomeAway property #2455566. Please let us know, if you are trying to group guests together using both homes or possibly looking for a larger property.
History:
The property's grand limestone exterior exemplifies old Austin stone architecture. When the rubble filled dam broke on Lake Austin around 1900 the shores were lined with large chunks of limestone. Subsequently many of the houses on the eastern side of Lake Austin were constructed with limestone from the lake shores.
The home and its out-outbuildings were built in 1906 by Judge Batts after whom 'Batts Hall' at the University of Texas was named. He was a Texas Supreme Court Justice famous for creating the Texas Railroad Commission. She was an artist and the first director of the University of Texas Art Department. Once a B&B the 'Studio' quickly became a favored honey-moon retreat and was voted 'Austin's most Romantic Retreat'.
***Please note that the age of this three-level stone structure makes for unlevel stone floors and a narrow stairway leads you from the lower living and bathroom level to the second level bedroom. Some guests may find these stairs more difficult to manage at night or in general depending on physical abilities.***

Summary: Enjoyed our stay overall and appreciated the accommodations. Quiet, serene, and private. Sarah was a nice host. But WIFI was not working and that was a little disappointing as that was a factor in our selection. Cable was out in bedroom but not an issue for us. The stairs two the second floor were narrow, uneven, and steep, which could not be discerned from the description or pictures. Floors are field stone and uneven. Had to be careful on floors and stairs. One should consider a different place if negotiating steep stairs or uneven floors is a challenge. Couch is actually a day bed set up with big pillows. It was a little awkward to sit on. A real couch would be better for relaxing in living room. Bed upstairs was very comfortable but only accessible from one side. Simply the nature of the narrow cottage. Despite these minor issues we enjoyed staying at such a unique place.

Summary: This stone cottage is very sweet, and the rooftop deck is a little oasis. Because it’s over 100 years old there are some quirks, and due to steep narrow stairs it’s not a good fit for anyone who is mobility impaired. However, I would definitely stay there again!

Summary: The property is historic and in a beautiful setting....quiet and peaceful. Lovely trees, a view of the river, interesting neighborhood with lots of different architecture. We understood the unit was small, and that was fine with us. A few challenges with TV and electrical, but the owners were right next store and exceptionally helpful. Easy to get down town, easy to explore the Hill Country. Nice fenced yard so our dog could just run outside. Weather was perfect for our visit - enjoyed the courtyard for wine and cards almost every evening. Some concerns with equipment - smoke detectors did not seem to be working, we blew a fuse at one point by using too much power at once in the kitchen. Again - owners were right over to help fix it for us. Kitchen was well supplied and when we discovered we needed silverware and a toaster the owners, once again, provided them immediately. I would recommend it for a couple looking for a peaceful and unique spot. The stairs are narrow and a bit steep, but handrails are provided. I would also suggest a smaller coffee table for the small living room - it would make moving around in that space much easier....and it would make room for a side chair. We enjoyed living in Austin for a month - so much to see and do! Museums, shops, music, history, parks, the beautiful State Capitol, the LBJ Library, the UT Campus, the amazing new downtown library. No excuse for being bored in Austin!

Summary: My husband and I were lucky enough to be able to host our intimate wedding at this unique and gorgeous estate! Corinne and Henry were extremey gracious to us and to our family, and made us feel very at home. There was definitely an ease of communication, Corinne always responded in a swift manner regarding any questions we had. We were glad we were able to have both the main house and the cottage for our wedding weekend, it was very needed! It was a wonderful experience to be able to share with our family and to be able to have the separateness of the cottage. We loved the location of the home, it was dreamy, beautiful, and the perfect place for us to have our dream wedding! We continue to get compliments from our wedding photos and everyone wanting to know where we got married, it truly is a gem located in the beautiful Austin hill country!
